Chinese Elderly
North London area
has the LARGEST Chinese population in London. Many Chinese elders who live in
this area and came from the rural part of Hong Kong, do not speak any English.
Ignorant of their rights, they find it extremely difficult to access public
services. Information are not translated or explained to them. Unable to
communicate with their neighbours, they are isolated and excluded. Many of them
do not live near their families as well. Public services, even though are
available, however, are not accessible nor appropriate for Chinese elders as a
result of communication, cultural, social and other barriers.

Elderly Lunch
The
project is to empower Chinese elders living in the North London area,
the project will be in 3 parts:
-
Information sharing – talks by local public service providers on
health and benefits;
-
Refreshment – for elders to be able to socialise and network;
-
Questions Time – open forum for elders to raise issues affecting them.
The
project will benefit Chinese elders in different ways. Firstly, with
guest speakers from local public services, such as health and social
care, housing, benefits etc, elders will be able to learn about their
rights and how best to access the public services they may require.
Secondly, they will be provided with a unique opportunity to meet up
with other members from the same community. Networking and sharing of
experience will reduce their sense of isolation and exclusion. It will,
we believe, develop their confidence to come out more.
Thirdly,
the Question Time component will act as an open forum for Chinese elders
to express their views on issues affecting their daily lives. With
representatives from local public services actually presented, the
issues they raised will be considered and feedback to them at a later
date.
And more to come
